Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Insight into Disability

Talking to Dave in the Lounge

Children from Beaufront County First School in Hexham were given a special insight into living with disabilities at Calvert Trust Kielder.

A group from the school spent two days at the centre in Kielder taking part in activities and learning about disability.

Respite care guests Dave, who is blind and Mattie, who is a wheelchair user; talked to the children about their disabilities and how it affects their lives.

The pair first met at the centre and have become good friends, meeting up regularly when they come for their respite care breaks, with Mattie becoming Dave’s guide around the centre.

Having Lunch

Fascinated and moved by their stories, the children invited Dave, Mattie and Aly (Senior Carer at Calvert Trust Kielder) to visit their school to have lunch and to accept a donation of equipment for the sensory room at the centre.

Handing over the donation at School

“The carers taught us not to be afraid of people who are different from us because we are all the same inside”

We came back with pride in ourselves and stronger friendships”.

We would like to thank all of the children and teacher at Beaufront County First School for their kind donation and for supporting the centre.
