Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Chalet Named in Memory of Inspirational Trustee

Friends and family travelled from across the country and as far as Canada, to watch as Mrs. Elspeth Straker declared The Henry Straker Chalet open, and launched The Henry Straker Foundation.

The Henry Straker Chalet

The first of five new chalets was named in honour of Henry Straker, MBE, an inspirational man and much admired Trustee of Calvert Trust Kielder. Peter Cockerill, CEO said:

“We are delighted to remember and pay tribute to Henry for his passion and enthusiasm for the work of the Trust."

Diagnosed with MS as a young man, Henry worker tirelessly to support disabled people in Northumberland. He received a Spirit of Enterprise Award in 1996 and his MBE for services to charity, in 2006.

The Henry Straker Chalet at NightThe luxury chalet has three bedrooms and is finished to the highest standard.  Featuring an ECO friendly hot tub and views across the forest, this self-catering accommodation is perfect for a relaxing holiday in the stunning Kielder Water & Forest Park.

Henry’s memory will live on through The Henry Straker Foundation, a fund created to provide bursary funding for those less financially able to enjoy the wide range of activities and accommodation at the centre.

Peter Straker said:

“My father would be delighted to know that the fund in his name, will benefit many more adults and children with disabilities.”
