Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Zip Zip and Away

Supporters of Calvert Trust Kielder have completed a 230m zip slide from Newcastle’s iconic structure raising over £1,500 for the charity.

The Tyne Bridge zip slide starts from the Newcastle side of the bridge and travels diagonally across the River Tyne before finishing at HMS Calliope on the Gateshead side.

Kelly and LauraTwo of the participants were Kelly Dunn, Director and Co-Owner of Neuro Partners and Laura Thompson, Deputy Director of Faculty Operations at Newcastle University.

Kelly said:

“We decided to sign up to do the zip slide over the River Tyne because we both like a challenge! Flying over the Tyne was exhilarating and such a memorable experience especially with our families cheering us on. It was amazing and I would highly recommend it!

At Neuro Partners we help people with disabilities to achieve their aspirations in the community and education and Laura works with students who overcome all sorts of challenges in achieving higher education qualifications.

We wanted to raise money for the Calvert Trust as in our roles we share the same values ‘it’s what you CAN do that counts’ and we have managed to raise over £500.”

Also jumping for Calvert Trust Kielder was Dean, a web designer from Newcastle who has cerebral palsy. Dean has raised £200 and he said:

Dean“I found doing the zip slide an amazing experience; luckily the weather was nice so I got to enjoy the view on the way down!

I chose to raise money for the Calvert Trust after attending a week long adventure camp at the centre with my secondary school. I also wanted to prove to people that having a disability, like cerebral palsy should not be a barrier to outdoor activities. I want disabled people to have more outdoor experiences and decided that the Calvert Trust was a charity that best fit with that ethos.”

There are still places available in the Baltic Zip Slide on Saturday 19 September, click here for further details and to book your place.
