Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Barnstaple Chamber teams up with Exmoor for challenge day

Ever abseiled down a stone wall in a wheelchair, or stood atop a stack of 23 wobbly crates hanging by a harness while trying to break the site record? Well, here’s your chance. Calvert Trust Exmoor has teamed up with the Barnstaple and District Chamber of Commerce to bring to you the Calvert Trust Chamber Challenge on Saturday 14 October.

Company teams will battle it out at Calvert Trust Exmoor by Wistlandpound across four specially designed outdoor challenges that will test contestants for skill, agility, courage and teamwork.

“This is a great opportunity to experience first-hand the work that Calvert Trust Exmoor does throughout the year at this award-winning venue,” CEO Heidi Watson said. “We have often been referred to as North Devon’s hidden gem. The charity’s primary function is to help disabled people, but on 14 October we are opening our doors to allow company teams to experience what we do here.”

“With solid support from the Barnstaple Chamber, we expect this event to be filled very quickly.”

Each team should consist of five members who will enjoy a full day at Calvert Trust Exmoor including breakfast, lunch, four outdoor activities and the presentation ceremony. Teams can earn bonus points if they have a member who has a disability, and extra points will also be awarded for the fundraising challenge that need to completed in advance.

Individuals can also enter and will be teamed up on the day.

In eager anticipation of the event, Chamber President Trudi Spratt, said, “The Chamber is really excited to present our Chamber Challenge with the Calvert Trust – it will provide an opportunity for the businesses of North Devon to come together at this excellent venue.  We hope that the day will raise money for the Calvert Trust Exmoor and also raise awareness of their amazing work as an accessible adventure centre.”

“If we can bring member and non-member businesses together while creating some friendly competition, so much the better. We hope this will become an annual flagship event for both entities.”

“We work hard providing networking and meeting opportunities for our member and non-member businesses across North Devon and beyond.  It is always a challenge in itself to find something fresh and different to do, so we jumped at the chance of working with Calvert Trust Exmoor for this event,” she said.

“We look forward to a successful day with businesses coming together to inspire one another and better understand each other’s challenges.”

Heidi Watson explained that Calvert Trust Exmoor has recently been more active in engaging with local business communities and this event is in part a reflection of those efforts.

“We have received very good support from companies such as Brend Hotels and Isca Barum, and we would like to expand our reach into the heart of businesses across North Devon and bring companies to the Centre so they can see our work first hand.”

“As well as looking after more than 4,000 residential guests each year, Calvert Trust Exmoor has much to offer companies in the way of volunteering opportunities and team-building days.

Entry for the Chamber Challenge with Calvert Trust is £50 per person or £250 per team of five, including breakfast and lunch.
