Calvert Kielder offers England's only Residential Respite Care provision that combines care with challenging outdoor activities. We focus equally on the carer and the cared for.


Calvert Kielder is recognised globally as a leading provider of outdoor experiences for disabled people. Our disabled guests experience the very same emotions and experiences as any other guests inside our safe, inclusive uniquely challenging facility and beautiful location.


For carers; we enable you to have the time to do whatever you want and to be whatever you want to be. For the cared for; we enable the space to relax and simply ‘be’ on your own terms, plus the opportunity to access a range of inspiring and increasingly challenging experiences and activities - from the serene to the scintillating – within the beautiful, uplifting and genuinely unique Kielder landscape.

Calvert  Kielder was awarded a  CQC inspection  (Care Quality Commission) overall rating of GOOD on 24th May 2017.


Calvert Kielder's Residential Respite Care provision is for adults over 18 years. Our residential visitors meet new people and make new friends as part of a truly bespoke experience.


Personal preference alongside a personalised care plan sits at the core of our discussion as together we plan exactly how you wish to experience your care and holiday. 


A Bespoke Approach to Care Provision

Your needs are likely to be unique and so too will be the personal care plan that we create together. We can offer sensitive, tailored support in the following areas and more:

  • Assistance with moving and handling
  • Administration of medication - tablets, ointments, inhalers, nebulisers
  • Assistance with washing and dressing
  • Assistance with packing and unpacking
  • Assistance with meals 
  • Catering for special diets
  • Management of medical devices -  catheters, Stoma
  • Bowel care - suppositories, enemas
  • Continence care - catheters, pads
  • Provision of airflow mattresses (subject to availability)
  • One-to-one care may be available for those with more complex needs


Our Respite Care bedrooms are grouped together within the heart of our organisation inside the main building. Rooms have been designed with flexibility in mind to meet the varied needs of our guests to include ceiling track hoists, moveable furniture, extra wide doors, en-suite facilities and a variety of grab rails to aid independent movement. We also have a range of specialist equipment available for your use during your stay. To ensure availability, please discuss your requirements with our team at the time of booking.



Facilities at Calvert Kielder include a large seated area with comfy settees, a TV room and a games hall that may be used for mobile cinema evenings, arts and crafts projects, indoor games or a disco in the evening. There is a coffee machine, bottle and spirits bar, ice cream, chocolate and snacks available at reception, drinks vending machine, a computer station, mini-gift shop and outside seated area with a giant chess set. Our accessible bathroom comes complete with hoist, Clos-o-Mat toilet and a Rhapsody Therapeutic bath. Each bedroom has a 24-hour alarm call system.



Our guests can breakfast, lunch and dine in the Dining Room. Meals are always home cooked, generously portioned, vegetarian options are available and specialist dietary requirements can be catered for. A fresh weekly menu is displayed in the Calvert Trust Kielder Dining Room every Monday.

Calvert Kielder Respite Care Packages – Relax Packages

A Relax Package is a really convenient approach to bundling 24-hour care, an en-suite room, all meals, snacks, drinks and light activities such as arts and crafts, Bird Watching, golf buggy rides, indoor games, visiting local attractions and shops, orienteering and geocaching, snoozelum, swimming and Wii Games. Such packages can be made to work for individuals, couples or groups of friends and family.

Relax Packages can cost from £725 per person for 7 nights.

Activities are made accessible by a range of adaptive equipment which will be demonstrated during your introduction to the activity alongside risk assessments to ensure you feel confident and secure about your experience.

Theme Weeks Packages

Guests love to meet up with friends old and new throughout the year for our regular themed weeks. Fun and laughter are guaranteed and we have a variety of theme weeks to choose from including Young at Heart, Go Wild, Halloween and Festive week.

Theme Weeks cost from £1,092 per person for 7 nights.



Transport to and from Calvert Trust Kielder within a 50-mile radius is available for an additional fee.  Please enquire at the time of booking.

For your total peace of mind, we are licenced by AALS (Adventure Activities Licensing Service), a Royal Yachting Association Training and Sailability Accredited centre and a British Canoeing Quality Mark and Paddle-Ability centre.


All activities are instructor-led by experienced and qualified staff who have undertaken specialist training in running safe activities for multi-ability groups.  Many team members hold National Governing Body Qualifications and all staff are enhanced DBS checked.


We welcome pre-stay visits to put your mind at rest and help with planning.

A short break of one or two nights can be arranged with a family member or carer for example, or if you are in the area you are very welcome to pop in, take a look at the facilities and speak to us about your individual needs.
