Sun shines for Lake District's C2C Cycle event

We were joined by a team of eleven riders for our 2014 Coast to Coast, and enjoyed a fantastic weekend. After dipping their wheels in the sea at Whitehaven on the 26th September, the team took on the following three days and 140 miles with a mix of grit, determination, and humour. The actual ride set off from the coast at 11am on the Friday, and was completed 52 hours later by all eleven riders by 3pm on Sunday. Thankfully for all involved, there were no major incidents - only a slightly buckled wheel which was soon fixed locally in Penrith; a few punctures; and a handful of grazes.

The weather couldn’t have been better, especially for the time of year: most riders arrived at LDCT’s car park in the pouring rain for a pre-event briefing, but thankfully, by the time we left Whitehaven, the sun was out and the skies were blue, and for the majority of the weekend that’s how it remained.

The first day saw the team tackle the Whinlatter pass before finding their way to Penrith for the first night’s stay. Day two saw the group triumph over Hartside after being tested by its steep and unforgiving accent (and hundreds of motorbikes); and whilst there were still some hearty climbs to test them, there was a sense of ‘having broken the back of’ the challenge once they reached the famous summit. The second night saw the team rest up in the picturesque town of Stanhope, before the third and final day began with a steep climb out of the town, followed by a much steadier ride to the finish.

There was a real sense of camaraderie throughout the 140 mile challenge despite many of the team members having never met before the occasion, and for the most part, the eleven stayed relatively close together.

The Lake District Calvert Trust would like to thank Tony Duncan; Pam Livingston; Gary Noon; Dave Shepherd; Mike Gannon; Nick Linton; Sam Edge; Gareth Pickering; Simon Hoban; Julian Handy; and our very own centre director, Sean Day, for a tremendous effort. A special mention must be made for the only female member of the team – Pam – who had no problem whatsoever keeping up with her male counterparts, and who arguably helped keep the overly competitive amongst the team in check!

Funds continue to be processed for the event with the hope being that the combined group effort will raise in excess of £7000 for the Lake District Calvert Trust. This has been collected through both sponsorship and a variety of innovative fundraising events. The money raised will go a long way to helping more people experience the magic of the Lake District Calvert Trust and we would like to thank each and every one of the C2C participants for their commitment to the challenge.

Keep an eye on our fundraising page and facebook blog if you would like to get involved in a future sponsored event.
