BBC Countryfile Films at the Lake District Calvert Trust

Matt Baker and a BBC film crew from Countryfile recently spent an exciting day filming with us.

The morning’s filming was based at our main centre on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake.  Students with disabilities from Scope, Beaumont College, alongside volunteers with spinal cord injuries from The BackUp Trust, demonstrated to Matt and the BBC Crew our exciting zip wire and wheelchair challenge course.

The afternoon’s filming took place at Quay Foot Quarry next to the Bowder Stone in Borrowdale, where Matt joined in abseiling the sheer 60ft vertical rock face.  Matt was shown how the Larkin Frame, designed for use in cliff rescues, is used by the Calvert Trust to enable those with disabilities to experience the thrill of abseiling.

Sean Day, Centre Director of the Lake District Calvert Trust said “It was a great privilege to have the opportunity to be featured in BBC Countryfile.  Matt really got involved with our visitors and enjoyed talking about why the Calvert Trust makes such a difference to their lives. Given Matt’s lifelong involvement with the countryside and activity it was clear that he really understood why the Calvert Trust is so needed.  We all very much hope that when the programme is shown in January it will encourage people to find out more about us and offer their support in some way."

The show will be aired by the BBC on Sunday 18th January 2015 at 6:30p.m.
