Low Wood Hotel Proression Solicitors   Lakeland Radio

The inaugural “Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race” in aid of Lake District Calvert Trust and sponsored by Progression Solicitors was held on Saturday 18th May at Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel, Windermere. Radio commentary and pre-event support was supplied by Lakeland Radio.

Over 25 teams from all over the County had been busy building cardboard boats to sail in the first Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race, organised by Councillor Ben Berry, on Lake Windermere.  There were a few simple rules- at least one person had to sail the boat over the 100m course, the boat could only be made from cardboard and duct tape but could be any size and shape!

The event was a huge success and despite some spectacular “sinkings” there were around 20 boats that survived the initial heats to take part in the final demolition derby.

There were prizes for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, best design, best dressed paddler and the Titanic Award for the most spectacular sinking! The winners were:

1st place- The Artful Lodger entered by White Cross Bay Leisure Park and Marina

2nd place-Ecotec – entered by Ecotec- alternative energy & professional plumbing

3rd place- Langdale Chase Gladmiral entered by Langdale Chase Hotel

Best boat design- Rocket of the Waves entered by Glyn Carradus

Best fancy dress- Hayes Oompa Loompas entered by Hayes Garden World

Titanic Award- Lakeland Radio entered by Lakeland Radio

Councillor Ben Berry (event organiser) said, "I love having fun and I love raising money for Charity. The ingenuity and craftsmanship of some of the boats was absolutely amazing. The event was enjoyed by all and went swimmingly. I can’t wait for next year!"

Anthony Smith (Director Progressions Solicitors) commented, “In spite of the weather the event was a great success and we were really pleased to see so many people on the day turning out to support the Calvert Trust, whilst having such a great time. We were delighted to have been the sponsors of such a fantastic event and look forward to next year which will be even bigger and better!”

On winning the Titanic Award Belinda Allen (Station Manager at Lakeland Radio) added, “Huge thanks to Lakeland Radio presenters Milli and John Pye for taking to the water, providing such entertainment and sinking in spectacular fashion. I am sure they will be first in the queue to design next years’ craft!”

Louise Miles (Lake District Calvert Trust Fundraiser) said, “ We are very grateful to the Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel for supporting the Lake District Calvert Trust by organizing this exciting event and to Progression Solicitors for their financial support too. The event was a great success with lots of spectators cheering the teams along. There was a continuous sound of laughter due to some very funny “Titanic” moments! Thank you also to Lakeland Radio for their continued support to the Trust and a very big thank you to all the participants who helped us raise nearly £700 ”

The Lake District Calvert Trust based just outside Keswick helps over 4000 people with disabilities a year to meet their own challenges and achieve their potential through the provision of adventurous outdoor activities. The charity helps change the lives of people with even the most profound physical, sensory and learning disabilities along with their friends and families.

In order to continue the specialist work at the Centre the Trust needs to raise over £250,000 a year and fundraising initiatives like the Cardboard Boat Race are crucial in helping to raise this amount.
