Four Lake District Calvert Trust supporters take on the Great Cumbrian Run

Last month Sarah McAllister and her sister Jo took to the tracks and competed in the Great Cumbrian Run in support of The Lake District Calvert Trust. They were joined by Bruce Pilling and Suzzi Garnett who opted to wear our running vests in support of the charity. Despite it being a big challenge, all four runners enjoyed the event, and made it across the finishing line in fantastic times.

The 13.1 Mile Half Marathon through the historic border city of Carlisle begins at the magnificent castle. The route then heads through the city centre before seeing runners make their way through the picturesque villages of Cumwhinton, Wetheral and Scotby. After 13 miles, the runners find themselves treading the tracks in the Sheepmount Stadium for the final few agonising metres where they get to cross the finishing line and celebrate their achievement.

Sarah has MS: after staying at LDCT with her family a year ago, she felt inspired to raise some funds for us to help ensure other families can experience some of their own unique Calvert magic.

In Sarah’s own words: A year ago, my boys and I were given a unique opportunity to go on a family activity holiday to the Lake District Calvert Trust. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of us to be able to do things we couldn't usually do because of my MS being so bad and me being in a wheelchair. I always swore that, if ever I was well enough, I would raise some money to pay them back for everything they gave us. As a result of our trip, just a year on, we are mountain biking as a family, walking up fells and canoeing on lakes. We've been inspired by the amazing work this centre does”

‘Team McAllister’ have so far managed to raise over £1000 through sponsorship. A half marathon and over £1000 in sponsorship is some achievement - top effort Sarah, and truly a testament to our ethos: it’s what you can do that counts!”
