Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Travelling at 3.6 hours per mile, Sandra Pryor reaches the top of Great End on crutches!

Inspired by her trip to the Lake District Calvert Trust Sandra Pryor climbed Great End on crutches last week. It took three days with overnight camping but Sandra’s amazing stamina and determination helped her reach the summit at midday on Tuesday 21st May.

5 years ago Sandra (now living in the Leicestershire area) acquired a disability that causes nerve dysfunction, muscle wastage, severe pain and muscle spasms in her legs. She needs to use crutches and a wheelchair just to go to the shops so setting herself the task of reaching the top of Great End, her favourite mountain in the Lake District, was going to be a huge challenge.

It took Sandra 3.6 hours on average to cover every mile on her crutches but she was so determined to reach the top and raise funds for the Lake District Calvert Trust.

Sandra says, “In 2012 I attended the Lake District Calvert Trust who taught me that by changing my way of thinking, using hours per mile instead of miles per hour, planning routes over days instead of hours and with the support of a team of volunteers, my dream could indeed become a reality.”

Sandra was supported by a fantastic team of volunteers and friends: Trevor (Sandra’s partner), Pete (Instructor at the Lake District Calvert Trust), Will (volunteer helper with Lake District Calvert Trust), Brett (Professional photographer), Carolyn (Life Coach), Stuart (Volunteer helper at Lake District Calvert Trust) and Arron (Youngest member of the team age 17 years).

The Lake District Calvert Trust based just outside Keswick helps over 4000 people with disabilities a year to meet their own challenges and achieve their potential through the provision of adventurous outdoor activities. The charity helps change the lives of people with even the most profound physical, sensory and learning disabilities along with their friends and families.

In order to continue the specialist work at the Centre the Trust needs to raise over £250,000 a year and fundraising challenges like Sandra’s are crucial in helping to raise these funds.

Sean Day, Centre Director said, “We are all incredibly impressed with Sandra’s courage and determination and were all willing her to reach her goal. We are so pleased that Sandra has had such a positive experience here at the Lake District Calvert Trust and would like to thank her for now supporting other visitors at the centre through her truly amazing fundraising efforts for us.”

Sandra had set herself a fundraising target of £1000 but has already gone far beyond that and money is still flooding in. Sandra said, “We met some really kind people on the mountain and when we told them what we were doing they were very generous with donations. Those that didn’t have much money on them have since donated via my just giving page.”

The volunteers also carried a window up to the top of Great End as a double glazing company had pledged to donate £550 if they got the window to the summit!
