Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Great North Push

We are delighted to announce that we have 30 runners taking part in the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday to raise funds for Calvert Trust Kielder.

Liz, Koyser and Natalie

When Koyser, one of our guests said he would love to take part but needed some help, two of our activity instructors, Liz and Natalie, stepped up to the challenge.  With  Koyser safely settled in his wheelchair they will be pushing him all the way from Newcastle to South Shields.

Liz Hawker, Activity Instructor, Calvert Trust Kielder said:

“When I arrived in Northumberland, the prospect of running in such beautiful countryside enthused me to get stuck in to a regular running routine. The Lakeside Way around Kielder Water became a regular route for me on many evenings after work whatever the weather, even during the heat wave we had in July.

Pushing a wheelchair with a sandbag from our climbing wall to create some weight was also a novel training session I thought up which amused many passers-by along the Lakeside Way.  While at work, if I see a colleague pushing a wheelchair and I am empty-handed I offer to push in order to get more training.

Natalie and myself are already fired up for Sunday, we are fit enough to see this challenge through to the finish with Koysor.  After many different suggestions from colleagues as to what would be best to push Koysor in, from our three wheeler chair to hand crank bikes, we have decided as a team to use Koysor's own chair that way he is comfortable and we are too.

We aim to finish in about 3 hours. In particular being around so many people will be amazing and daunting too. I will be relieved when I get to the start line, amongst all the traffic let alone the finish line. But that ultimate final crossing in South Shields will be FABULOUS! I CAN'T WAIT!"

Last year Team Calvert runners raised over £10,000 which is an incredible achievement.  The funds raised have made a huge difference to our work.

Tracy Russell, The Therapy Rooms

Taking care of our runners as they cross the finish line will be Tracy Russell from The Therapy Rooms.

Tracy has been a practising massage therapist based in Newcastle for over 15 years.  In 2011, she set up The Therapy Rooms in Jesmond with the aim of establishing a centre of excellence for the treatment and care of the musculoskeletal system, using proven muscle therapy techniques.

Tracy Russell, The Therapy Rooms said:

“In support of Calvert Trust Kielder, The Therapy Rooms is pleased to be able to offer post-event massage to those runners to have gallantly run the Great North Run on behalf of the Trust.

Runners need the benefits of massage therapy to enhance their running ability and avoid debilitating injury. Post event massage is particularly useful in reducing muscle soreness and preventing injury in the long term. After a half-marathon it feels really good too.”
