A Marathon Effort!

Calvert Trust would like to say a huge thank you to all of the fantastic people who ran this year's Virgin Money London Marathon in support of either Exmoor, Kielder or Lake District Centre.

Between them our runners raised over £35,000, with the final total still to be confirmed as more sponsorship is still coming in. This is an amazing amount of money that will make a huge difference to the lives of many guests at all three Calvert Trust Centres.

Hazel Ditchburn from Calvert Trust Kielder said "Massive congratulations to all the runners who made it across the finish line on Sunday. The amount raised by our runners this year is phenomenal and will help to create many memorable and life changing experiences for our disabled visitors and their families. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make this possible."

All seventeen Calvert Trust runners completed the 26.2 miles of the marathon, which is a fantastic achievement. The fastest Calvert Trust runner completed it in just 3 hours and 45 minutes, and the slowest in a respectable 6 hours and 16 minutes, well inside this year's slowest recorded time of 8 hours and 4 minutes.

One of the runners supporting Calvert Trust Kielder was Rupert Springfield, who ran in memory of his uncle Henry Straker, who was a trustee and supporter of Calvert Trust Kielder for over 20 years and whom the Straker Chalet is named after.

Rupert said "Nearly five years to the day of the marathon my amazing uncle Henry passed away, and I'm thrilled to be able to run for his favourite charity who have set up a Foundation in his name. He had MS for over 30 years but always told us "when the going gets tough, the tough get going". I'm sure I'll hear him saying that as I puff and pant around the course."

Henry Straker worked tirelessly to support disabled people in Northumberland, and demonstrated throughout his life the Calvert Trust's philosophy of it's what you CAN do that counts. The Henry Straker Foundation, in Henry’s memory, offers bursary support to enable adults and children with disabilities to enjoy a break at Calvert Trust Kielder.

Katie Simpkins, from Calvert Trust Exmoor said "What an incredible day!  A huge thank you to our runners who went through so much training and effort to raise money for Calvert Trust.  I cannot believe how much money has been raised from this event,  It's phenomenal.  Thank you for all your hard work which will help us enable people with disabilities to share in life’s opportunities."

Two of the runners supporting Exmoor were Mat and Graham from Sainsbury's Barnstaple; Calvert Trust is the store's charity of the year. Mat ran the race dressed as a Gorilla, chasing Graham dressed as a banana!

Sarah Batty from Lake District Calvert Trust said "We are hugely grateful to our marathon runners: they have done themselves, and us, incredibly proud. This challenge takes literally months of preparation involving a gruelling training schedule, not to mention the huge task of gathering sponsorship! We want our participants to know that their efforts will make a phenomenal difference to visitors to the Calvert Trust, and will have a lasting and significant impact. Thank you so much!"
