Local Barclays employees raise £1,900 for Calvert Trust Kielder

Big-hearted Barclays employees who work at Barclays Business in Northumberland and North Tyneside, took time out from their day job recently to get involved in fundraising activities to support Calvert Trust Kielder.

In total the team raised a well deserved £950 by cycling 26 miles around Kielder Water.

Mark Yates, Paul Duggan, Paul Bastow, Paul Smith, Graeme Watson, Stewart Blackett, Matthew Heaton, Rachel Bell and Cath Foster all completed the 26 miles on Friday 13th May (Pictured left to Right). The rest of the team provided support on the day or covered the incoming customer calls so service was not affected.

The guys picked up hired bikes from Purple Mountain at 10am in Kielder Village and followed the Lakeside Way which goes all the way round the reservoir. There were some steep hills at the beginning of the ride which they all managed to negotiate safely. At the half way point at the dam they met the Area Manager and two other team members that were there to support with drinks and cakes. They stopped for lunch after another 4 miles at Calvert Trust Kielder who generously provided lunch for the team. After this refuel the team managed to complete the 26 mile gruelling ride with a sense of triumph.

Furthermore, the money raised will be matched pound for pound, up to £750, as part of the Barclays Community Investment ‘Charity Begins at Work’ Programme, bringing the total to £1,900.

Jeannie Marsh, Community Advisor for Barclays said, “At Barclays we strive to strengthen local communities in which we live and work by supporting a range of causes from local schools to centres for older people.  This is a fantastic example of Barclays staff fundraising with the local community to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference.”

Hazel Munro, Corporate Development for Calvert Trust Kielder said: “The funding will enable us to continue helping children and adults with disabilities from all over the North East to experience a stress free break with a sense of freedom and adventure.  Working with local businesses such as Barclays is tremendous value for the Trust and we would like to say a huge thank you to the Northumberland and North Tyneside Business Team at Barclays for their support.”

At Barclays, we take our responsibilities seriously. We’re really proud of our leading community investment programme.  In 2010 more than 62,000 people were involved in volunteering, fundraising and regular giving, supporting more than 8,000 charities around the world.
