Keswick Rotary Golf competition raises £6,900 for Lake District Calvert Trust

23 teams took part in the Charity Open Golf competition and raffle on June 23, which raised a fantastic £6900 for Lake District Calvert Trust.  The competition was organised by Keswick Rotary Club, working closely with Keswick Golf Club and main sponsor United Utilities.

Players enjoyed their pre-round bacon butties and coffee before getting down to the serious business of winning prizes, despite it being the wettest day for weeks.

In first place with 88 points was Wayne Cartmell and his team – David McDonald, Kevin Brown and David Coates. They were followed in second place by Mike Bell with Mike Clark, Peter Towers and Stuart Wilson with 84 points.  And in third place was the Lake District Hotels team – Gary Quigley, Jonny Ogle, Neels Ferreira and Gary Wilson with 81 points.  Wayne Cartmell thanked Keswick Rotary and the Golf Club saying “It’s fantastic to enter a golf competition which is raising money for an important local charity like Calvert Trust while we have a good day’s golf and the winners go away with some great prizes”.

In addition, the top scoring Keswick Club team was “The Horse & Sally” team and the Rotary Club competition winner was Workington Derwent Rotary.

On course competitions included longest drive won by Russell Kirkbride and Christine Ellwood, straightest drive won by Julian Exeter, nearest the pin won by Wayne Cartmell and nearest the pin in two won by John Greaves.  The putting competition winner was Joan Thorburn, two’s competition winners were Peter Austin, Peter Long, John Black and Robert McCartney.  And finally, Gary Watson stood in the rain for 5 hours, taking on all comers in the ever popular “Beat the Pro” competition.

Jennifer Scott, Fundraising Officer at Calvert Trust was delighted by the success of the golf competition.  “The money raised is fantastic and every penny will have a lasting impact upon the lives of the individuals with disabilities who visit our Centre.  In addition, we had a great day’s golf which everyone seemed to enjoy – there was a real buzz about it.  Thank you to everyone who played a role – it is very much appreciated”.
